One end is designed with a shallow curve and is used for retracting the vaginal walls gently. The shallow curve ensures that the speculum does not exert too much pressure on the vaginal walls.
The other end of the Sims speculum has a deeper curve and is typically used to access the cervix and hold it in place. This is particularly useful during procedures like cervical smears (Pap tests), IUD insertions, and endocervical curettage.
HOW TO USE:Insert the Speculum & hold the speculum with one hand, with the shallow curve or blade facing upwards. Gently separate the labia with your other hand to visualize the vaginal opening. Insert the shallow-curved end of the speculum into the vaginal canal, following the natural curve of the vagina. This is usually done with a slight posterior angle. Slowly advance the speculum while gently spreading the vaginal walls apart. Be patient and communicate with the patient to ensure their comfort throughout the process. Once you have a clear view of the cervix, you can switch to the deeper-curved end for a better view and stability.
